Face Yoga for Lip Lines
Fine lines around the mouth (sometimes called smoker's lines) and thinning lips can age your appearance significantly. Lip fillers carry risks and cost $300+ per session. Face yoga offers a natural alternative for fuller, smoother lips.
What is Lip Lines & Thin Lips?
Lip lines are the vertical wrinkles that form above and below the lips. Lip thinning is the gradual loss of lip volume that occurs with age. Together, they make the lip area look aged and can cause lipstick to bleed into the lines.
The lips are formed primarily by the orbicularis oris muscle — a complex sphincter muscle composed of multiple fibre bundles that encircle the mouth. Unlike most facial muscles, the orbicularis oris has no bony attachment; it is suspended entirely by its connections to surrounding muscles including the buccinator, zygomaticus, and levator labii. With age, the orbicularis oris atrophies and loses volume, which directly causes the lips to thin. The vermilion border (the sharp line between the lip and surrounding skin) also flattens, causing the lips to roll inward and appear even thinner. Vertical lip lines form because the skin above and below the lips is thin and tightly adherent to the underlying muscle, so every contraction of the orbicularis oris creates a vertical fold. Collagen in this area depletes faster due to high mechanical stress from speaking, eating, and expression. Studies show that lip volume decreases by approximately 25% between age 30 and 60. The condition affects all ethnicities, though individuals with thinner lips and lighter skin types may notice lines earlier.
The Science Behind It
The orbicularis oris contains both slow-twitch endurance fibres (for sustained closure during eating) and fast-twitch power fibres (for forceful movements like whistling). Face yoga exercises target both fibre types through a combination of isometric holds and dynamic resistance movements. When the orbicularis oris undergoes hypertrophy from regular exercise, the increased muscle volume pushes the lip tissue outward, creating a natural plumping effect from within. This is physiologically equivalent to what lip fillers achieve externally — increased volume pushing the lip forward — but through living tissue rather than injected gel. The exercises also increase blood flow to the lip tissue, which has a rich capillary network. Enhanced circulation brings more oxygenated haemoglobin to the surface, producing a naturally rosier lip colour. Additionally, the repeated stretching and contracting of the perioral skin during exercises stimulates fibroblast activity and collagen remodelling along the vertical crease lines, gradually smoothing them from the dermal level.
Why Does This Happen?
- Repeated puckering motions (drinking from straws, kissing, whistling)
- Collagen loss in the lip area with aging
- Sun exposure damaging the delicate lip border
- Smoking accelerates lip line formation dramatically
- Natural loss of hyaluronic acid in lip tissue
How Face Yoga Helps
Face yoga strengthens the orbicularis oris (the circular muscle around the mouth) which plumps the lips from within by building muscle volume. Exercises also increase blood circulation to the lips, giving them a naturally rosy, fuller appearance. The resistance training smooths vertical lines by improving the skin's underlying support.
Best Face Yoga Exercises for Lip Lines & Thin Lips
Lip Pucker Press
Pucker lips tightly against a finger for resistance. Hold 10 seconds, release into wide smile. Alternate 15 times.
Lip Circle
Move pursed lips in a full circle motion, as if drawing a circle with your lips. 10 circles each direction.
Lip Curl
Tuck both lips over your teeth, press lips firmly together. Hold 10 seconds, release. Repeat 10 times.
Lip Tap
Rapidly tap lips with fingertips for 30 seconds to boost blood flow and natural lip color.
Your Daily Routine
Start each morning with thirty seconds of Lip Tapping to instantly boost blood flow and natural lip colour — this creates a visible rosiness that lasts for hours. Follow with one set of Lip Pucker Presses against your index finger for resistance-based strengthening. At midday, perform Lip Circles in both directions — this can be done privately and takes under two minutes. In the evening, complete all four exercises in sequence for about six minutes. After exercising, apply a hydrating lip balm or treatment with hyaluronic acid and peptides to lock in moisture while the lip tissue is warm and receptive. For accelerated plumping results, add an extra set of Lip Curls before bed.

What Our Students Say
“My lips were getting thinner every year and the lines above my lip drove me crazy. The lip exercises give an instant plumping effect, and after 6 weeks the lines are much softer.”
— Nandini K., Jaipur
“I considered lip fillers but was terrified of the needle and the risk of migration. Abi's lip exercises gave me visibly fuller lips in just three weeks. The Lip Pucker Press is my favourite — I can actually see the plumping effect right after the exercise.”
— Farah Ismail, Kuala Lumpur“My lipstick was bleeding into fine lines above my lip, making me look older than 47. After 8 weeks of daily lip yoga, the lines have smoothed enough that my lipstick stays put. A small change that made a huge difference to my confidence.”
